Leave benefits constitute another valuable part of your total compensation. As a University, we realize that from time to time you need to be away from your job to take care of family, health and other issues. The leave benefits available to you depend on a number of factors. Some of the factors are: your employer, your bargaining unit, your pay basis, your work schedule, and/or your length of service.

| The President may grant additional sick leave to state funded employees who have exhausted all accrued sick leave credits. This additional sick leave may be at full, partial, or without pay for up to six month from the date of disability. |

| Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) |

| Employees who meet certain service requirements are entitled, through the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), to up to 12 weeks of leave for serious personal or family health conditions. This program also protects the employee’s job and benefits upon return from leave. |

| Typically, sick and and other disability benefits can be available prior to the anticipated due date of your baby. These benefits will continue for a period of time past the actual delivery date. |

|
| Relatively few disabilities last beyond six months, but when they do, the economic impact on you and your family can be severe. Through various programs you may be eligible for replacement of a substantial part of your income. |

| Employees are covered under New York State Military Law and Federal Military Law. Under Section 242 of the New York State Military Law, Reservists and National Guard members are entitled to military leave with pay for up to 30 calendar days or 22 workdays (whichever provides the greater benefit). |

| There may be situations where you need to be away from work for personal reasons that are not covered by any of the leaves described above. Based on your employment type and employer, you may be eligible for personal leave. |

| Sabbatical leaves for professional development may be made available to academic employees who meet the requirements set forth below. The objective of such leave is to increase an employee's value to the University and thereby improve and enrich its program. Such leave shall not be regarded as a reward for service nor as a vacation or rest period occurring automatically at stated intervals. |

| New York State provides short term disability insurance benefits to members of our UB community paid through the Research Foundation. This coverage can cover you up to six months from the date your physician certifies you unable to work. |

| UB is proud of our safe work environment and we work hard to make sure that our faculty and staff remain safe. If you are absent due to injury or illness resulting from an on-the-job accident or occupational disease, you are protected from loss of income in several ways. |

| Breast Cancer Screening |
|
| It is important for employees to go for breast cancer screening and eligible employees can take up to four hours of paid leave annually for screening for breast cancer without charge to leave credits. The benefit is available to both male and female employees funded by the State. Breast cancer screening includes physical exams and mammograms for the detection of breast cancer. |

| Prostate cancer screening is important and eligible State employees are entitled to take up to four hours of paid leave annually for screening of prostate cancer without charge to leave credits. Prostate cancer screening includes physical exams and blood work for the detection of prostate cancer. |

| Employee Blood Donation Leave |
|
| Giving blood is giving life. UB conducts blood drives on campus all year and encourages employees to give. Eligible employees may be entitled to either use accruals or take unpaid time to make this important donation. |

| Breast Milk Expressing in the Work Place |

| Employees are entitled to use break time or meal time each day to express milk for her nursing child for up to three years following child birth. As an employer, we will make reasonable efforts to provide a room or other location, in close proximity to the work area, where an employee can express milk in privacy. |
