RF graduate students are now REQUIRED to attend a health insurance orientation session to enroll in health insurance.

Eligibility Requirements

The Research Foundation Graduate Student Health Plan will be available to graduate students who meet the following eligibility criteria :

  • Enrolled as a full-time graduate student
  • Paid on a biweekly basis with a projected annual salary of at least $4,122 ($158.54 biweekly)
  • Appointed to a position with the Research Foundation where it is anticipated that funds will be available for an appointment period of at least one semester.

International students with “J” visas are not eligible for this plan and must enroll in SUNY Health Plan for International Students. International Graduate Students holding a “F” visa are eligible to enroll in this program but must also purchase medi-vac insurance.

When Coverage Begins & Ends
Coverage will begin on the first day of your appointment if you enroll during Open Enrollment.  If you are appointed after the Open Enrollment period, coverage will begin on the first day of appointment as long as you enroll within 45 days of your appointment.  Coverage is termed after the 28 day health extension under the POMCO plan.

Coverage Change from TA/GA to Research
If you are transferring to the Research Foundation payroll from the State payroll, it is your responsibility to make us aware of this change to help us prevent a lapse in your coverage.

Open Enrollment Period
Each year Research Foundation has an open enrollment period from August 15 through September 30. During this time you may enroll if you have not previously done so, or delete your coverage or change your individual coverage to family coverage without a qualifying event.


Bi-weekly Graduate Student Health Deductions

Currently the Research Foundation pays 90% of the premium for individual coverage and 75% of the individual plus dependent coverage. Enrolled students will pay their portion of the premiums through payroll deductions August 15, 2009.

Waiver of Mandatory Health Insurance Fee

New Appointments
Once you enroll in The Research Foundation Graduate Student Health Insurance Plan, we will inform the Student Medical Insurance Office of your enrollment and waive you out of the mandatory program. Please pay your tuition bill in full minus the mandatory health insurance fee, which is $1,605.00 for domestic students for the entire year and $951.00 for international students for the full year.

Re-Appointed and enrolled in Health Insurance during Summer 2008
Reports are sent to the Student Medical Insurance Office to waive you out of the mandatory program. Your new appointment paperwork must be submitted to Human Resource Services in order for you to be on this list. Please pay your tuition bill in full minus the mandatory health insurance fee. The cost for domestic students is $1,581.00 for the entire year. International students coverage for the spring and summer sessions is $994.75.  

Health insurance through another source
Please provide proof of your health insurance coverage through another source, such as spouse or parent, to the Student Medical Insurance Office at 223 Student Union, North Campus or visit their website. Once you present this proof, which should be a copy of your health insurance policy or identification card, they will waive the student mandatory health insurance from your tuition bill. It is not necessary to contact Human Resources for this situation.


Health Insurance for Research Foundation Fellows

POMCO is the healthcare plan, for the Research Foundation for fellows.

To enroll a fellow into the health insurance plan, we require a completed enrollment form along with a letter from the PI on department stationary giving us authorization to charge the cost of the health insurance to the specific grant.

In the letter we require the fellow’s name, person number, social security number period of time for the fellow to be covered. Please include the project, task and award to be charged, and if the project will be paying for individual, individual plus one, or family coverage.

Health Insurance is charged to the grant for the full cost, it is not charged to the fellowships paycheck.

RF Principal Investigators and Staff Portal

The Research Foundation maintains its own website for Principal Investigators and other employees paid through the Foundation. You can access specific policy information about Graduate Student Medical Insurance through the RF website. You will need to obtain a username and password.
