Hiring and Orientation

Things to Think About When Preparing to Hire

The quality of employee performance begins with the quality of the hiring process. One of the keys to quality hiring is defining the job expectations required from a new employee. To ensure equity and quality you will need to complete a 9-step hiring process for all potential employees at UB. Whether you are hiring or promoting someone in your department, you will need to begin by answering the following questions:

  • Do you have funding for the position?
  • Did you meet with the appropriate HR representative to review job requirements for the position, such as skills, knowledge, ability, salary range, etc.?
  • Have you created a user account in UB Jobs (UB's online recruitment system)?

UB offers a wide range of promotional options, career choices, and development resources for employees interested in growth opportunities or a career change.

New Employee Orientation (NEO)

We have designed our orientation program to provide new employees with the information that they need to make a smooth transition into their new role here at UB. Our orientation program provides important information employees need to become proficient at their new job in a timely manner and to become a member of our family here at UB. Orientation spans our various organizational entities - the campus, your division, your department – and helps to understand:

  • The University’s structure, values and our history, as well as leadership and strategic directions
  • What is expected of you, and how your job contributes to our missions of Research, Education, and Public Service
  • The benefits available to you include a wide range of medical, dental, vision, retirement, long-term disability, accruals, flex-spending, tuition assistance, etc.
  • Our philosophy about work-life balance
  • The tools, resources and assistance available to help you find your own balance of professional and personal growth
  • Your life at UB: safety, arts, music, and sports; and
  • Your opportunities to participate as a member of our community, to be a good steward of our resources, and to give back to our city, region, and state

New employees will receive an invitation to the Orientation sessions:

  • Session I welcomes new employees and helps them learn more about the University as a whole.
  • Session II covers benefits for those who are eligible.

In addition, several times per year, new employees are invited to attend a Campus Bus Tour, which consists of a two hour tour highlighting various buildings on the North and Main Street campuses.
