| Payroll & Paychecks |
Direct Deposit
The University offers you two options on payday:
you can receive a physical check, or you can choose to be paid through a direct deposit to the account, or multiple accounts of your choice.
Paychecks and pay stubs are delivered via campus mail from the payroll office to your department and distributed by designated personnel within each department.
If you select the direct deposit option, no matter where you are, your pay will be automatically posted in your account on payday.
You can enroll in our confidential and reliable Direct Deposit program by filling out a direct deposit form. You should also take time to review the direct deposit information brochure.
If a federal holiday falls on your payday, checks and deposits will be made the day prior to the holiday.
Faculty and staff are paid on a bi-weekly basis. Specific pay dates will vary dependent on an individual's designation as indicated below.
Mandated deductions are those required to be deducted from your pay check by either the federal, state or local your local governments.
| DEDUCTION |
REASON |
| FICA |
A combination of Social Security (OASDI) and Medicare taxes deducted from your earnings according to a schedule prescribed by law. The OASDI deduction is 4.2% of your adjusted gross payroll for the year 2011. The earnings are capped each year. The 2010 Social Security cap was $106,800. The 2011 Social Security cap is the same - $106,800. The Medicare is 1.45% of your adjusted gross payroll and has no cap on your earnings. Your employer will contribute 6.2% OASDI of your adjusted gross payroll. |
| Federal Withholding (Income) Tax and New York State Income Tax |
The amount deducted will depend on your earnings, status (married or single) and the number of dependents you claim on your federal withholding form (W-4). If you wish to claim different allowances for your New York State Income tax an IT-2104 will need to be completed. If you wish to make any changes in your status or allowances, a new form should be completed and sent to your payroll office. For employees claiming exempt status or requesting an earned income credit (W-5), a form must be submitted annually by January 15th to your payroll office. |
| Local Taxes |
If you have a New York City address listed as your residence we are required by New York State to deduct local taxes. By January 31st of each year, your employer will provide you with a Wage and Tax Statement (W-2) showing your total earnings for the previous year and total amounts withheld for taxes and certain deductions. |
| Deductions for other services |
As a UB employee you can purchase UB Bulls tickets for football and basketball, season tickets for the Speakers Series, membership for the fitness center and recreation activities. Depending upon your affiliation with the campus such as your job title or union affiliation certain deductions regarding pay, retirement, benefits and other optional services may apply. |
